The Makara is is a 74 foot Viking sportfisher and serves as the mother ship for both our pelagic and flats research programs. The Makara's home port is Beaufort, NC adjacent to the Duke University Marine Laboratory.
During the winter months, the ship is based out of North Palm Beach Marina in Florida where we regularly make research trips to the Bahamas, Caribbean and Mexico. We have the capacity on board for long range trips to reach remote destinations. Dual generators, RO water maker, SSB and Sat phone, washer/dryer, multiple freezers and icemakers enable the Makara to conduct research studies anywhere in the world.
In addition the Makara is equipped with a 17ft Maverick Carbon/Kevlar flats boat on the bow for shallow water research. In 2008, we added a Contender 33 foot center console to the fleet to expand our tagging program. The crew of the Makara has extensive commercial and recreational fishing experience in many areas of the world including Alaska, California, Costa Rica, Panama, Belize, Mexico, Indian Ocean as well as extensive experience along the East Coast of North America.
